Covers the Australian payment rules and the ETH-specific errors that send a deposit somewhere it cannot be recovered.
Quick verdict
Ethereum deposits fail for reasons Bitcoin deposits do not: the wrong network, an unsupported token, or a signature that was an approval rather than a transfer. The legal position is the same either way, because online casino services cannot lawfully be offered to people in Australia and licensed wagering operators cannot accept digital currency for bets.
- Best for: readers comparing ETH funding who want the failure modes named before they sign anything.
- Check first: the network the deposit address belongs to, and whether the exact token is supported.
- Do not skip: reading every wallet prompt, because an approval is not the same as a payment.
Address format is not proof of support
An Ethereum-style address looks identical across mainnet, most layer-two networks and several unrelated chains. Your wallet will happily send to it on whichever network is selected, and the funds then exist on a chain the recipient may not watch.
Tokens compound the problem. ETH, an ERC-20 token, a wrapped version of another asset and a bridged balance can all sit behind the same address while following different crediting rules. Support for one does not imply support for the others, and a deposit page that lists only a ticker has not told you enough.

The Australian rules that apply
Under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 it is an offence to provide an online casino service to a person in Australia, or to advertise one. The Australian Communications and Media Authority enforces the Act and can ask internet providers to block sites it finds operating illegally. There is no Australian online casino licence for a site to hold.
Separately, since 11 June 2024 Australian-licensed online and telephone wagering operators cannot accept credit cards, credit-linked products or digital currency for bets. That restriction comes from the Interactive Gambling Amendment (Credit and Other Measures) Act 2023.
An offshore site accepting ETH therefore sits outside both regimes. If a deposit goes wrong, the dispute path is the operator's own support desk and nothing else.
Gas, pending and reverted transactions
Every Ethereum transaction needs native currency in the sending wallet to pay for gas, even when the asset being moved is a token. A wallet holding tokens but no ETH cannot move them, which surprises people at the worst moment.
A transaction can also revert. It is included in a block, the gas is consumed, and the transfer does not happen because a contract condition or a limit was not met. Check the status in a reputable block explorer before assuming funds are lost, and never pay anyone who offers to release a stuck transfer.
| What you are sending | Common failure | What to confirm first |
|---|---|---|
| ETH on mainnet | Sent on a different network | The network named on the deposit page, not just the address |
| ERC-20 token | Token not supported by the recipient | The exact token contract the site credits |
| Layer-two balance | Recipient only watches mainnet | Whether that specific network is accepted |
| Wrapped or bridged asset | Treated as a separate asset | Whether unwrapping or bridging is needed before sending |
Approvals and signature requests
A deposit should be a plain transfer. If a page asks you to approve a token allowance, connect to a contract or sign an arbitrary message, that is a different action with different consequences, and a broad allowance can let a contract move your balance later.
Read each prompt and reject anything unrelated to the payment you intended. Review and revoke old allowances periodically, and keep a separate wallet for gambling funds so an approval mistake cannot touch longer-term holdings.
- Transfer: moves a stated amount once
- Approval: grants a contract permission to move your tokens later
- Message signature: proves control of the address, and can authorise more than it appears to
Records to keep
Save the transaction hash, the network, the asset, the amount, the gas paid, the timestamp and the AUD value at the time. That set answers almost every question support will ask, and it is the only version of events you control.
Crypto is treated as property for Australian tax purposes rather than as foreign currency, so disposals can carry tax consequences independent of any gambling result. Take that question to a registered tax agent rather than a casino help page.
Limits, exclusion and support
Wallet funding has none of the delay a bank transfer imposes, so the brake has to be set in advance. Decide the amount before you open the wallet, and keep it in a wallet that holds nothing else.
BetStop is the national self-exclusion register and blocks licensed Australian wagering providers from opening accounts for you once you register. It does not reach offshore casino sites. Gambling Help Online provides free counselling on 1800 858 858, by phone or web chat, at any hour.
Questions Australian players ask
Can I send any ERC-20 token to an ETH deposit address?
No. The recipient has to support that specific token and network. A matching address format tells you nothing about whether the deposit will be credited.
Why did my transaction fail after I paid gas?
A transaction can revert when a contract condition or gas limit is not met. The computation already performed is still paid for, which is why gas can be consumed without the transfer completing.
Is Ethereum gambling legal in Australia?
Online casino services cannot lawfully be offered to people in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, and licensed wagering operators have been barred from accepting digital currency for bets since 11 June 2024.
What happens if I deposit on the wrong network?
The funds exist on a chain the recipient may not monitor. Recovery depends on whether the operator controls that address on that network and is willing to help, so there is no guarantee.
Should I approve a token allowance to deposit?
A straightforward deposit does not need one. Treat an allowance request on a deposit page as a reason to stop and check what the contract is being permitted to do.
Before you deposit
Open the operator page, read the current terms and set a limit first. Online casino services are not licensed in Australia; the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 applies and the ACMA enforces it.
